![]() Park in the back of the church, within the alley (not in the parking lot). The museum is located within an old church. I did notice a large amount of grammatical errors upon reading through them, and would recommend a more professional display of the information if at all possible. My husband found the historical information very intriguing.Īll of the information displays look to be handmade as they are typed on computer paper, printed out, and attached to colored cardstock/construction paper. There is a permanent display of Egyptology items, including small sculptures and scripts. ![]() It is my understanding that this exhibit is a traveling exhibit and may not be permanent. However, it offered up a great selection of original Bob Dylan manuscripts, photos, and information. It is by no means a large and "mainstream" museum, in comparison to other well-known historical museums in MN. Tuesday and I reminded everyone that we are the only Iowa Quad City with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library thanks to our partnership with Dolly & the RVFD and also wore my CoCoRaHS shirt that I got last year for conglomerating small donors together to raise over $1700 to improve weather data and reporting. We visited the museum because of its great reviews on Tripadvisor and because it was a free experience for our group of six to enjoy. Tomorrow afternoon Santa will be riding into our town on the QCs largest ladder truck thanks to the Riverdale Volunteer Fire Department.ħ) Albeit a little dressed down for the photo shoot with Dave - it was giving If you’ve never been to Tiffiny’s Tipton Bakery, they’ve been making this treat since my grandma was 8 years old and lived down the street.Ħ) While I’m taken back to Tim Allen’s performance in the Santa Clause - and I’m not quite sure how to feel about Santa driving a tank - I’ve really been enjoying the holiday spirit spreading around the QC. Will greatly miss Dave Donovan and all his contributions at BOTH my jobs!ģ) Joined Joshua Dyer at the Augustana engineering department with my coworker Tara to talk about how we ended up where we are and great job opportunities for students at our office.Ĥ) Taught FIRST LEGO League to my 3rd grader and friends - I’ve never done robotics so this was pretty cool!ĥ) Staff brought me the pride of Tipton - crescents. Larkin.ġ) Held our community’s first ever sewer & utilities committee meetingĢ) Was able to thank another tireless public servant of Scott County, Iowa on 30+ years of dedicated service. ![]() I hope we can find a way - just like that little plaque reminds us about the USS Maine - to remember the courthouse, beautiful as it once was, and a symbol of our freedoms and justice across the land, possibly the pinnacle of achievement for Mr. There are still things that can be done to memorialize what was lost this week and can educate future Quad Citizens on that magnificent structure and the man who constructed it - one of his finest jobs - Charles Larkin: It is one of seventeen museums in the country that has a collection of more than a million manuscripts and historical documents. It is housed in the former St James Chapel that was built in 1912. While it’s gone now, and replaced with a modern, functional, and much less striking courthouse, I am reminded of walking along its sidewalk and enjoying the war memorials, including a small piece of the USS Maine, with a plaque to the county’s soldiers in that war. The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is located in Duluth in Minnesota’s St. I think this courthouse masterpiece lost its way when the beautiful domes were replaced by a box covered in aluminum siding to protect the beautiful stained glass. The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museums and Steven Pressly’s funeral home restoration are other iconic downtown Rock Island successes. Through a dedicated group of volunteers, it now hosts regular tours, has earned hundreds of thousands in grants, and is going to be a river cruise day trip destination. The Hauberg Mansion is another great success story, also on the chopping block, our team of neighbors convinced the city to keep it and reinvigorate it. My very first house was saved from the Rock Island wrecking ball for $1 by a coworker’s father-in-law in the 1980s and by the time my wife and I finished with it, it hosted multiple historic tours. I’ve argued to save many old buildings from the brink with limited success. Over the past 15 years of living in historic places in the Quad Cities (my current home just barely makes the cut as an over 60 year old structure - and maybe its brief tenure as home of the mayor will qualify it for the register someday?), and particularly during my time as historic district president in Rock Island and as vice chair of the preservation commission, I’ve developed a love for history and the old buildings that exemplify that history. The last, surely you remember? The USS Maine, of Spanish American War infamy. The first three are the progression of a once stately county courthouse into a pile of rubble I’ve been driving past each day this week.
